X (Twitter) character counter with post preview
Count characters the way X does: links as 23, emoji as 2. See how your post looks in the feed and what goes past the 280 limit before you publish.
Your post shows up here as you type.
How to use it
- 1Type or paste your post into the box.
- 2Watch the ring: it counts the way X does and turns red past 280.
- 3Check the preview, trim what is marked red, then copy the post.
How X counts characters
X does not count letters one by one. A regular account gets 280 characters a post, but some characters weigh more than others: every link counts as 23 characters however long it is, because X shortens it, and emoji, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2.
That is why a plain character count from a text editor is often wrong for X. This counter uses the same rules as X itself, so the number you see is the number X will check when you post.
What goes past the limit
When a post is too long, the preview marks the part that does not fit, exactly where X would cut it off. Shorten the post until nothing is marked, or turn it into a thread with our free thread maker.
Accounts with X Premium can post up to 25,000 characters, but the feed shows only the start of a long post with a "Show more" link, so the first 280 characters still decide whether people read on.
Posts that sound like you, published on time.
plotpost writes a month of X posts and threads in your own style, and a drag-and-drop calendar publishes them through the official X API, with analytics to see what works.

What is the character limit on X?
280 characters for a regular post. Accounts with X Premium can publish long posts of up to 25,000 characters.
Do links count towards the limit?
Yes, but every link counts as 23 characters whatever its real length, because X wraps links in its own short link.
Why does an emoji count as two characters?
X gives emoji and characters from scripts such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean a weight of 2. A post of only emoji fits 140 of them.
Do @mentions and #hashtags count?
Yes, they count like normal text, including the @ and # signs.
Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?
No. The counter runs in your browser and nothing you type leaves the page.
